His characters distinguish themselves through their delicate fatalism, brusque treatment of sex and death, and a kind of dark elegance provided by Bryn's unique writing style. He will be missed as a creator, but not as a friend. Let's all hope he comes back to create for the FPL soon. Abdiel velcommen, thanks for finally getting time to come answer a few questions, Bryn * Bryn straightens his respectable tie, flashes eloquent smile to the crowd. Bryn No problem.. Abdiel Alright, standard first question: which of your characters do you feel has been your "greatest success" and why? Bryn Definitely Bob. By far the epitome of my FPL writing, and my most original concept I think...even if it was called a Nightmare Before Christmas rip-off. You know who you are. *ominous glare* Abdiel What was your process in making Bob, and what were your inspirations in creating the character/story? Bryn Well...I was watching Nightmare Before Christmas..*ahem* and it merely developed from there. I believe it started with thinking how incredibly cool Jack would work as a character picture. It developed from there...the idea the movie presents of.. tangible characters for these intangible things in our lives...stuff like that.. Was rather quickly made I think. Only took about a week.. Abdiel I guess the question burning in everyone's mind is... will you be returning to the FPL? Bryn Don't know, hombre. Social life is rather full force currently, love and tension.. all that. Very Shakespearean. And I'm supposed to actually do well in school this year...though considering I haven't done any of my first work homework, that's looking dismal. But if I do decide to officially retire, I'll probably do one last character...to please my housewife Hexxy. Mack_the_Knife Heh Abdiel Housewife? Abdiel So... what are your opinions of "teams" in the FPL? Care to discuss any of the group projects or joint characters you've been involved with throughout the course of your career? Bryn We're talking unofficial teams here? Abdiel Any kind Bryn I think they're a great thing FPL-wise. Very communal and usually the result of a bunch of friends sitting in a chatroom brainstorming, for hour upon hour. Most of them only get done because of everyone in the group "motivating" each other. You feel a sort of responsibility, and you actually end up getting characters done, if you're a lethargic creator like myself. Personally, I've been involved in let's see..the whole Ryuketsu/Uhei thing, though little was written about that.. The Crusade...that brought me to fame. One of my characters I get nostalgic about, Kyoko, came from that.. Abdiel What about the "Guardians"? Bryn Yeah, definitely. That was a good time. Mucho behind the scenes scheming, generally fun characters, even if they were serious. And I never pass up the chance to have my character raped to death...not that we ever did that.. Jembres came out of that though. He did pretty good I suppose. Little..reflection of myself in him. My cynicism I suppose. * Mack_the_Knife whistles nonchalantly Bryn I enjoy him, though I don't think he's my best attempt. Abdiel Do you think the FPL is an "old boys club"? Mack_the_Knife Ingest only food supplement 72 but not 73b, except on Tuesdays when you are allowed to go to potty Bryn I'm biased on the elitism thing, because I'm rather fond of elitism, despite my political views being the opposite. I think the separation will be there even if it's unspoken. 'tis just normal social interaction. Abdiel What, to you, separates a merely "good" character from a truly "great" one? * Bryn gently taps at his binary cigar. Bryn Ah, hrm..good question. I think it just has to strike a certain chord with me. Obviously good writing is a priority. I often enjoy a sort of quirky sense about characters, something not quite right...or merely a well done character. Not sure exactly. Tough question. Anything that gives me a headache is usually good.. The complex sort of headache. Abdiel Does it have more to do with the story, or the way that it's told - in your opinion, that is? ;) * Mack_the_Knife makes Bryn mention lots of names so Abby has to link to all of them Abdiel NO! Bryn Ah, I think that's subjective to the character. It can succeed either way. Sometimes the simplest of stories can be told brilliantly. Sometimes the most complex stories can be mundane in presentation...but...just to please the crowd... Forte, Devyn, Guy Who Rapes Jem Who's Name's Escaping My Horrid Memory At the Moment, Alexander Young, Aleister Michaels, et cetera. Mack_the_Knife Sacriel, heh Bryn I can say that my favourite creators are among us currently, those being Mack, Seryph, Maxx, DF and even yourself Mr. Abdiel. Certainly the first two though. Definitely highly respected in my eyes. Many hours spent plotting with them...more props to Pie and 3D as well, both great guys and amazing creators. Abdiel Thank you. Heehee, we all gave him $100 Abdiel Speaking of the Apoc, what are your views on the FPL's IC element? What do you enjoy in a story? How do you go about writing them yourself? any favorite IC incidents/story arcs? Bryn Personally, I consider the IC element more important than the fights. But that's because I'm an artiste. I like stories that engage me. But I don't write them myself mon frere. The most I've written before was 3 pages.. Favourite IC incidents? Hmm. Perhaps the Apocalypse chapter where Bryn Shima was the focal point. It was masturbatory. Definitely some moments from The Crusade.. There was some nice Kyoko/Devyn sexual tension there. I'm so self-absorbed. Mack_the_Knife heh, aren't we all... Abdiel Nothing wrong with that. I know you're a master RPer... is there any way you can think of to further incorporate this mode of expression into the FPL? Bryn I think a FFRP (free form roleplay) version of the FPL could be quite enjoyable for people. Though most attempts to do so have devolved to fighting.. Mack_the_Knife And twinking... Bryn It can be incorporated into IC writing. A fic I once wrote with Hexx, when Aleister and Alexander first joined the SLJ (definitely one of my favourite IC moments, for that note), was done pretty much in the form of FFRP..writing paragraphs back and forth..I think it's an effective group writing method. Just choose an editor. Abdiel Is there any advice you'd like to give to newbies trying to make their first successful char in the FPL? Bryn Definitely.. Go out of your way to piss people off, as well make horrible character after horrible character. Then make friends with powerful people, make a decent character, and get sudden respect. Abdiel what, in your opinion, is the best little game/book/movie/CD/etc * Bryn is almost as eloquent as Mr.T. Almost. Bryn Oh, umm.. Hmm. Invisible Monsters by Chuch Palahniuk. Think Fight Club, except with girls, and cooler.. But on the note of Invisible Monsters, the two main characters are a model with the bottom of her jaw blown off and a drag queen. You just can't go wrong. And FFRP. Though I horde that to myself, and my secret identity.. Abdiel Anything/Anyone else you want to plug while you're here? Bryn Umm..I'd like to plug The Seventh Seal.
