A TRIP ABROAD
Here we are in heatwave corner and I am here with yet another update, this time concerning our trip to Meteor-Storm's very lovely corner of France
Spring has turned to summer, the heat is beginning to wilt the lillies and our heroes are back in Blighty after a couple of gigs in the beautiful Charente region way down there in French France.
This year's jaunt was seriously scaled down compared to last year with a minimal crew of three Alans and two roadies (International Bongo Baker and the ever present Mrs. Galaxy were on hand to pick up the pieces should things not go according to plan) all staying at Alan Meteor-Storm's French country retreat.
As it happens everything went off as smoothly as you like with Friday's gig in Chef Boutonne town square being an absolute highlight as hundreds of people witnessed Lipstick Torpedo in full flight in the balmy open air of the French night.
On the Saturday a late change of venue, due to the nightclub originally scheduled turning into a restaurant at the eleventh hour, found our heroes playing outside the Cafe de la Paix in Ruffec......"OUTSIDE A CAFE ??" the Alans roared in unison......."DO THEY KNOW HOW LOUD WE ARE ??".
Of course it was fine and all turned out splendid......this being live music weekend all over France it transpired that bands were setting up all over the place and after the Torpedo had finished their set (at 1.15 AM after playing for four hours pretty much non-stop) everybody stepped across to the town square where a trash metal band were playing outside the town hall.........much laughter ensued. Yes, live music in the streets at 2 o'clock in the morning.....you try finding that in England!!
As a parting note, on the weekwnd the grand return to our green and pleasant land, a gig was booked at Melbourn village fete.....Melbourn being a small village on the outskirts of Cambridgeshire. The expectations were exactly as you would imagine, your average village fete consisting of a bouncy castle and members of the local round table flogging homemade buns......not the kind of environment for 1970s rock band you would think......how terribly wrong everybody was.......
A giant marquee was set up complete with a full size stage and some fabulous white lighting, let me tell you, as Lipstick Torpedo hit the stage the place went bonkers........it was like open evening in bedlam.......these people obviously don't get out much normally so when a full on spectacle comes to town the hair is very much let down.....the band played on as the marquee rental people turned up to collect their posessions and threatened to unplug the entertainment. After being warned that, should they touch the power at this point they would most likely have a riot on their hands and after taking a glance at the manic crowd they slunk quietly away with tails firmly between legs.
For any of you who haven't yet witnessed it, this little spectacle was testament to the power of live music played frantically by three blokes who should frankly know better to a village fete full of people who frankly......should know better. I suggest you get yourself along to a Torpedo gig sometime very soon and witness this ongoing lunacy for yourselves.
