The Cardinals on Saturday completed the formality of
placing starting pitcher Woody Williams on the
disabled list and used the opening to activate right
fielder J.D. Drew.
Drew, disabled retroactive to June 28 because of
patellar tendinitis of his right knee, was on the
bench and got into the game as a pinch hitter for
Saturday night's game against the San Diego Padres and
is expected to start Sunday.
Drew said on Saturday that he expects to undergo
arthroscopic surgery shortly after the season to
address what has become a chronic condition. The knee
bothered Drew near the end of last season and has
repeatedly flared through this year's schedule.
His discomfort became so great before landing on the
disabled list that Drew attempted to time his steps so
that he would brake with his left leg. Drew added that
a recent magnetic resonance imaging of the knee
revealed about a 33 percent tear.
"A little snip here, a snip there, clean it up and do
the rehab for the whole offseason and then come back
and hopefully not have to deal with it anymore," Drew
said.
Jocketty said Drew's prognosis came as news to him.
"That's the first I've heard of it," Jocketty said
before Saturday night's game. "I certainly haven't
heard that from any of our medical people."
Regardless of whether or not Drew has the procedure,
manager Tony La Russa confirmed that Drew's playing
time will be more closely monitored the rest of the
season. Playing outfield irritates the knee more than
swinging a bat.
"Once it gets aggravated, it's hard to calm it down,"
said Drew.
Williams suffered a strained muscle in his side during
a July 6 start against the Los Angeles Dodgers and
likely will be out for the remainder of the month.
Jocketty said Saturday that a four-week estimate was
"the maximum" amount of time that Williams will be
lost.
The Cardinals will have to make an additional roster
move before Tuesday's game at Dodger Stadium. Andy
Benes is scheduled to appear but technically remains
on the disabled list.
Jocketty meanwhile is encountering a constricted trade
market. The New York Yankees have made starting
pitcher Orlando Hernandez off limits following Roger
Clemens' groin pull Friday night. The Baltimore
Orioles remain reluctant to discuss Scott Erickson,
who is winless in his last 13 starts. Jocketty may
improvise by looking at options including Tampa Bay
Devil Rays starter Paul Wilson.
