Schilling, the most dominant personality in the Phillies clubhouse, was a vocal critic of Drew's during the rookie's financial standoff with the ball club. During the negotiations, Schilling suggested that Drew might want to sign with a team that would issue him a batting helmet with double earflaps.

Schilling's venom toward Drew has lost some of its sting in the 11 months that have passed since the Phillies' rights to the young outfielder expired. All Schilling would say when asked about Drew earlier this week was "he's just one of nine Cardinals I have to get out." Now, it looks unlikely that Schilling will have to do that. Before last night's game, one Phillies player wondered if Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was trying to protect Drew by holding him out of the lineup.
