Classic moments
Dve najupadljivije činjenice vezane za pobednike u poslednjih 20 godina su: pauza i prethodno trčanje na distanci od 2.000m. Svi pobednici su imali prethodni start u prethodih 50 dana, većina čak u poslednjih mesec dana. Pobednici sa najdužom pauzom pre starta bili su: Black Tie Affair (49), Cat Thief (42) i Sunday Silence (41). Prošlogodišnji pobednik i prvi favorit Pleasantly Perfect će u trku ući posle pauze od 69 dana, a pobednik "Belmont Stakes" i "Travers Stakes", Birdstone koji je zaustavio "Pametnjakovića" će imati pauzu od 63 dana! Reč je o grlima koja su se dokazala na distanci od 2.000m pobedama: Pleasantly Perfect (BC Classic, Dubai World Cup), Birdstone (Travers Stakes). Takođe, svi dosadašnji pobednici su već imali start na distanci od 2.000m.
Favoriti su do sada samo pet puta odneli pobedu. Wild Again je dobio prvo trčanje 1984. posle trećeg mesta u slobodnom handikapu na travi i kvotom od 33-1. Alphabet Soup('96) i Cat Thief('99) su na kladionici stajali 19-1. Put do drugog trofeja nije bio nimalo lak. Posle ubedljive pobede u "Santa Anita H.", šest meseci pre "Classic-a" ustanovljena mu je tako ozbiljna povreda da se pomišljalo o povlačenju. Ovoga puta na putu do odbrane trofeja mu je stajali favori Apptitude (Jockey Club Gold Cup), Sakhee štale Godolphin (Arc de Triomphe), Gallileo(IRE) (dvostruki pobednik evropskih klasika), Black Minnaloushe (Irish 2000 Guineas) i prošlogodišni rival Albert the Great (Jockey Club Gold Cup 2000).
"When I first pushed the button at about the three-furlong pole, I didn't get a jump forward at first, I didn't get a feeling of acceleration that I'm used to," Chris McCarron "I didn't get any deceleration but not that typical burst. Then when Sakhee got to my hip, and Tiznow saw him before I did, I felt acceleration at that point and said ‘oh good'. When I asked him to run, maybe he wasn't ready to go, but he's always ready to go when the competition comes to him."
"When I went by Chris with furlong and a half to go, my horse is a hard horse to get by, I was more worried about someone coming from off the pace." Najveće iznenađenje priredio je Arcangues (Wildenstein FRA) 1993 u Santa Aniti, koji je pre trke imao kod bukmejkera kvotu 133-1 pobedom sa dve dužine prednosti. Da sve bude neverovatnije, evo šta je Jerry Bailey rekao kolegi Stevens-u u padoku pre trke:

Alan Cooper (Niarchos racing manager): "We have decided to bypass the Breeders' Cup as Bago will stay in training as a four-year-old. Bago's objectives during the early part of the season will be European races around 10 furlongs like the Prix Ganay, the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and the Eclipse. Later we will be looking at events like the King George at Newbury before another attempt to win the Arc. Then it could be a Breeders' Cup race at Belmont Park."
