I am the middle issue of five children born to an itinerant banker and a frustrated interior decorator. I grew up to become an alcoholic. I've been logging sober time for several years, but the work is grim and desperate. Samuel Johnson said of intemperance:
He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.
