Note that this CD collection of Shareware and freeware is not just peculiar to Zimbabwe - it is a truly global product. Most of it originates from the USA. It is relevant worldwide, but especially to the 3rd World.

I have chosen most of the items on the basis of quality - they have an excellent reputation and/or they have won awards. Note also I have tried to avoid packing the CD with the kind of stuff which computer freaks get excited about, but which has little relevance to the real world and to the business of producing goods and services, making money, putting food on tables, clothing children and families, putting roofs over heads etc..

There is NO (ZERO) pirate software at all on this CD - EVERYTHING is legitimate. It comes from internet downloads, and from free discs from the front of computer magazines over the years... Most but not all of the internet downloads are from http://www.zdnet.com (ziff-davis - PC Magazine).

The 640 megabytes here would take at least 40+ hours to download over the internet, thus costing at least US$ 30. But many of the packages found here are NOT even available through the internet - they come from a number of Magazines over the years costing in total about US$ 100+. There are probably 50 - 200+ man-years of work in the products on this CD - you can cost that at US$ 1 - 10 million. So there is a lot of value in this little CD.....

Use freely, copy to your clients, associates and friends. Give away or sell for any price you want. Do training or consultancy, chargeable or free. Checkout the packages if you want to design/commission your own or to write your own - it will give you ideas....

Note that most stuff here is Win95, win98, winnt or win2000. a few bits are win 3.1. There is no linux software on this cd - maybe someone else does that one??? or I may do it later...

Most contents are for companies to use - inventory packages, accounting packages. Some is for programmers - delphi, jbuilder, smalltalk.

Note that this is a GLOBAL product (although it should find more customers throughout the 3rd world, (including G15 among others)) - it is as relevant to small companies in the West as it is to small companies in the 3rd world...

PS - checkout the files Weir_ReadMe.txt which are found in some of the sub-directories to get my comment on the software.....

PPS - the 3rd world often cannot afford full-priced software - but stuff like you find here is no second-best - regard it as a contribution from the West to the 3rd world.....

PPS - those packages which are shareware (and not freeware) will indicate how much the charge is, but it is not strictly necessary to make that payment - in the 3rd world forex is scarce and so is money - the writers and owners of the software will usually understand the circumstances that rule when non-payment is made from a 3rd world company or individual. Of course I am not encouraging or condoning any breach of the Shareware philosophy, just saying that in the 3rd world things are different.....

PPPS - when leaving me, the CD has been thoroughly checked for viruses and found negative. But when being copied by others, accidentally or maliciously, viruses may have entered. If you get direct from me then just take routine precautions; if you get a copy from someone else then I recommend a thorough virus check before using.

APPENDIX A - explanation of the concepts of shareware and freeware:

Shareware is a way for companies to do inexpensive marketing of software. They set a recommended shareware price on the software and issue it freely to end-users and to intermediaries of all kinds. Individuals and companies can try it out free of charge. if they like it and/or find it useful they finish up installing it on one or several or many PC's and use it frequently or infrequently in their business or leisure. In such a case they are meant to send money to the company which created the software. Full info on how much to pay and how to make payment is displayed on startup and/or when using the product. In practice probably 60% of users for example in the USA pay up; probably 30% of users in Europe; probably less than 5% in the 3rd world. But the revenue from the USA Market is sufficient to enable companies which write good software to survive and prosper (often very well!). Winzip and PkZip are an example of a very successful global company which sells all their products on a Shareware basis - and their products are absolutely state-of-the-art - at the leading edge of technology - no second-class product!

Freeware ( or Public Domain Software) originates in a variety of ways. Companies keep on developing better and better products, and sometimes the older product is still very good, but is difficult or impossible to sell. So some companies release the older product free as a "loss-leader" on the front of computer magazines or for internet download. The theory is that persons using such products get to like and appreciate them and later buy the up-to-date product. Other times, a research lab in a company developes something really good, but the company (often correctly) assesses that the costs of marketing the product into a market which already has well-established players and products is too expensive. Then they may release the product as freeware, rather than kill it and render its benefits useless to mankind. Sometimes indivuals just write something very useful to Society which didnt take them very long to create, and they decide to benefit Society rather than try to get rich (and possibly fail); sometimes they can benefit from Consultancy work which arises from the publicity they get - a bit like writing a textbook - most people dont make much money from that but they get financial spin-off...
